So it's Friday night and time for another blog post. This time its going to be about my experience with first meeting Bobby and how we became friends; and depending on if I get tired or not, I will be including my interview with Bobby from earlier today so you (few) readers can get to know what he is like and such.
So it was the beginning of the second semester at Shasta College. I was taking ASL 1 and it was my second time ever taking a class at the college; needless to say I was a little nervous. I had just gotten my license so I had driven alone to the college for the first time that day which was amazing...but I ended up getting there almost half an hour early. (I got great parking though) So as I sat in the class room waiting for school to start, people began filing in. I sat on the end of a table so I would only have to have one person sit next to me; I didn't want anyone to sit next to me... yet one man managed to ;)
Bobby walked in with a few minutes to spare and parked his walker right next to me and sat down in the seat to my right. He introduced himself as Bobby Thuemler. Right away I had a feeling he could be a cool dude to befriend. He had a bubbly personality and acted young for his age which helped to bring me out of my shell. He told me that this was his second semester taking ASL 1 because he felt it could only benefit him to take it twice to ensure he had mastered all the signs. I then was told he was also taking a computer class (to help him learn the basics), water colors, and communication skills. That day I realized we could work well together in class and I made sure he and I sat next to each other from that day on. And just like that a friendship was formed. A few weeks later he brought up the idea of me driving out to the Veterans Home on Fridays to practice our signs and finger spelling. I thought this was a great idea and gladly began driving to his home each week.
The first time I showed up at Bobby's home we had lunch in the mess hall with his friends. At first I was fine but then his friends started making jokes and teasing me and I couldn't tell at first if they were joking because they all seemed so serious...then one of the waitresses told me they were just playing and then I was able to let loose and crack a few jokes myself.
After lunch every Friday, (Bobby always insists on paying for my meal) we would walk back to his room and begin to work on his signs. This weekly visit led to me beginning to help him with learning to work his laptop, DVD player, and smart phone.
And with that, hopefully you (few) readers understand a bit more on how I became friends with Bobby.
That's all folks!!d
PS I'm pretty tired so I wont be including Bobby's interview, but I promise it will be posted sometime this weekend.
