Reflection (Like a Mirror)

Welcome back to another post that at first glance may seem like its about mirrors. Well...its not...
Time to reflect on how my project Adopt-a-Vet is coming along!
As of right now, my project is going along quite well. I am meeting Bobby every Friday to spend time doing whatever he wants. A typical day with Bobby looks a little something like this:
-I arrive around 12 o'clock
-We eat lunch together and sometimes his friends join our table
-We all talk and joke around and have a great time
-When Bobby and I finish our lunch (which he insists on buying me each week), we take the long walk back to his room
-Once inside he usually has me help him learn more about how to use his computer or phone or DVD player
-I also trouble shoot all his technology and help explain and write out easy to understand instructions that he can use during the week when I am not there
-Once done with his tech, we practice American Sign Language, which was the original reason I started visiting him (Bobby is in my Sign Language class at the college is how we met)
-Once we get done practicing our signing, we do a variety of things from looking at his garden to looking at his photo albums
-About this time I leave but never without receiving a big hug from Bobby and him telling me how much he appreciates me helping and visiting him

My mentor has been a big help in providing gas money and thinking of ways I could help Bobby such as getting him Social Security benefits and whatnot.

All my fellow cohorts who comment have been great and extremely positive so shout out to you guys for taking the time to read this blog o' mine.

I think this test project to see how well a real program to bring teens out to the veterans home is going great. Visiting Bobby once a week and doing whatever he wants for a few hours has been a really cool experience. He has so many stories and is always making me laugh. It feels great to do something for someone besides yourself.

I haven't had any problems yet so as long as it stays that way, making a program should be a breeze.

Stay tuned because I realized I should make a post interviewing Bobby after I left his home today so next Friday I will be sure to draft a post so you readers can get a better knowledge of Bobby and what he's like.

For those who read this far, thanks for all your support!
Cheers! -Gabriel

  1. I think this is a very good cause and you can learn about all the great things he's done and been through in his lifetime which I would love to read more about sounds so interesting

  2. I love this project so much! I don't know what happened to the text of you blog; check on the highlighting, text or background color. Something is off and it makes it hard to read.

  5. This project is full of heart, Gabe. Any ideas or progress into getting others to visit the hoe and talk to a vet?

    1. My project is actually a test to see how well an actual program would work. I'm gathering information from some of the other vets and people working there to see what they think about the idea. Since I haven't known Bobby for long I figured I could use this as a test to see if was even plausible for a program like this to exist. :)
